Kedley Fabric Arm Pouch – Small/Medium – Support Level 2 Orthopaedic Fabric Arm Sling for Gravity-Offload Immobilisation of the Wrist, Forearm, Elbow and Shoulder – Fits Left and Right Arm
The Kedley Fabric Arm Pouch is a Support Level 2 orthopaedic fabric arm sling providing gravity-offload immobilisation across the wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder via an adjustable cross-body strap that distributes the weight of the upper limb comfortably across the contralateral shoulder and back. The fabric pouch cradles the forearm and wrist, the adjustable strap routes across the upper back and over the opposite shoulder, and a comfort pad provides padding at the shoulder contact point to prevent pressure discomfort during extended wear. A buckle closure at the strap allows straightforward single-handed adjustment and removal.
This is the Small/Medium size (KED047). The Medium/Large size is separately available (KED043, EAN 6003058068439). Fits left and right arm — the strap routes across the back of the body and over the unaffected shoulder regardless of the arm being supported. From the Kedley Orthopaedic range. MHRA Class 1 Medical Device. Materials: Polyester, Polypropylene, Foam. No Latex warning. EAN: confirm with supplier.
Fabric pouch cradles the forearm and wrist; adjustable cross-body strap offloads the entire weight of the upper limb across the contralateral shoulder — supporting the wrist, elbow, and shoulder simultaneously.
Repositionable comfort pad reduces shoulder pressure at the strap contact point; buckle closure enables straightforward strap length adjustment and single-handed removal.
The cross-body strap configuration fits either arm — strap routes across the back and over the opposite shoulder. No separate left/right variant required.
From the Kedley Orthopaedic range. MHRA Class 1 Medical Device. Medium/Large size (KED043) separately available for larger arm circumferences.
- Gravity-Offload Mechanism — Fabric Arm Sling vs Compression Support: The Fabric Arm Pouch is a gravity-offload immobilisation device, not a compression support. Its primary therapeutic function is to eliminate the gravitational load on the wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder by transferring the weight of the supported limb to the contralateral shoulder via the cross-body strap. This is clinically distinct from elasticated or neoprene compression supports, which apply compressive force to a joint but do not unload gravitational stress. For conditions where gravitational traction on healing structures is the primary pain driver — fractures, dislocations, post-operative soft tissue healing, and shoulder instability — gravity offload via a sling is the appropriate mechanism, and compression alone is insufficient.

Fabric Arm Pouch vs Advanced Foam Arm Sling (KED056):
Feature Fabric Arm Pouch (KED047/KED043) Advanced Foam Arm Sling Black (KED056) Support Level 2 2 Construction Fabric pouch; cross-body strap; comfort pad; buckle closure Foam figure-of-8 loops; no separate pouch; neck-loop configuration Strap routing Across back, over opposite shoulder — traditional arm sling Neck-loop — weight carried by neck/cervical spine Cervical loading Minimal — weight distributed across back and shoulder Loads the cervical spine — not suitable for patients with pre-existing neck pathology Forearm position Cradles the forearm in a fabric pouch at approximately 90° elbow flexion Forearm supported in smaller wrist loop at angle adjusted by neck-loop position Size options Small/Medium (KED047) and Medium/Large (KED043) Universal one size Best for Patients requiring traditional sling with cross-body strap; patients with neck discomfort precluding neck-loop design; children and smaller adults (S/M size) Discreet low-profile sling; short-term soft tissue injury support - Size — Small/Medium (KED047): This listing is for the Small/Medium size. Select based on arm circumference using the Kedley size guide. The Medium/Large (KED043, EAN 6003058068439) is separately listed for larger arm sizes. Selecting the correct size ensures the pouch securely cradles the forearm without the arm slipping forward and the strap achieving the correct sling angle.

| Condition / Indication | Key Clinical Features | Fabric Arm Pouch Appropriate? |
|---|---|---|
| Distal radius / wrist fracture — post-cast or confirmed undisplaced | Following fall on outstretched hand (FOOSH); confirmed fracture managed conservatively or following cast removal; requires ongoing arm elevation and support | ✓ Yes following fracture management plan confirmed by the treating team. A&E or fracture clinic assessment and imaging must precede pharmacy sling recommendation. The sling supports the limb during the healing and rehabilitation phase, not as acute fracture immobilisation. |
| Humeral shaft fracture — hanging cast / conservative management | Spiral or transverse humeral shaft fracture managed conservatively; requires gravity traction maintained by arm sling | ✓ Yes as directed by fracture team — the cross-body strap configuration maintains appropriate arm position. Fracture clinic follow-up is essential. |
| Shoulder dislocation — post-reduction immobilisation | Following glenohumeral dislocation and reduction; anterior shoulder immobilisation required during soft tissue healing; restricted external rotation and abduction | ✓ Yes following reduction confirmed by treating team. Post-reduction sling immobilisation is standard management for anterior glenohumeral dislocation. Duration and position protocol should be confirmed by the treating clinician. |
| Clavicle fracture | Mid-shaft or distal clavicle fracture; conservative management standard for undisplaced fractures; sling for pain relief and limb offloading during union | ✓ Yes following fracture assessment — the cross-body fabric sling is a standard device for clavicle fracture conservative management. The comfort pad reduces strap pressure at the contralateral shoulder. |
| Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury | AC joint separation following FOOSH or direct shoulder impact; grades I–III managed conservatively with sling | ✓ Yes for Grades I–III AC joint injury conservative management as confirmed by the treating clinician. Grade IV–VI injuries require orthopaedic referral. |
| Rotator cuff tear — post-operative or significant acute | Post-operative rotator cuff repair immobilisation; significant acute full-thickness tear requiring offloading pending surgical assessment | ✓ Yes as directed by the treating surgical or physiotherapy team. Post-operative sling use protocol and duration should be determined by the managing surgeon. |
| Soft tissue arm or shoulder injury — significant | Significant muscle or ligament strain requiring limb offloading; forearm or upper arm contusion; elbow ligament sprain | ✓ Yes — gravity offload reduces traction on healing soft tissue structures of the shoulder, elbow, and forearm during the acute recovery phase. |
| Post-operative arm support — upper limb surgery | Following elbow arthroplasty, forearm osteotomy, tendon repair, nerve surgery, or other upper limb procedures requiring sling immobilisation | ✓ Yes as directed by the treating surgical team — post-operative sling use should follow the surgical team's immobilisation protocol. |
| Neurological upper limb weakness — stroke, brachial plexus injury | Flaccid upper limb following stroke or brachial plexus injury; glenohumeral subluxation risk from gravitational traction on unsupported limb | ✓ Yes — gravity offload via arm sling prevents inferior glenohumeral subluxation in flaccid upper limb paralysis. Neurological rehabilitation team should confirm appropriate sling and positioning for the individual patient. |
| Suspected undisplaced fracture without imaging | Wrist or arm pain following significant trauma; no deformity; patient has not been assessed | A&E or minor injuries unit assessment and imaging required before pharmacy sling recommendation for suspected fractures. Do not recommend as the sole management for unassessed suspected fractures. |
Pharmacist Guidance — Elbow Position at 90°: The standard therapeutic position for most arm sling indications is elbow flexion at approximately 90° with the forearm horizontal — achieved by adjusting the cross-body strap length after the arm is placed in the pouch. Confirm the patient can achieve and maintain this position comfortably before completing the sling fitting. For some specific indications (e.g. posterior shoulder dislocation, specific fracture configurations) the treating team may specify an alternative arm position — defer to the treating clinician's instructions in these cases.
⚖️ Fair Balance — Sling Duration and Mobilisation: Prolonged immobilisation in an arm sling beyond the period indicated by the treating clinician risks shoulder stiffness (adhesive capsulitis), muscle atrophy, and delayed return of function. Patients should be counselled to use the sling for the period recommended by their treating clinician and to begin gentle mobilisation exercises as soon as directed by their physiotherapy or fracture management team. The sling facilitates healing during the immobilisation phase — it does not replace the active rehabilitation programme that is essential for full functional recovery.
- Step 1 — Unclip the strap buckle: Unclip the strap buckle before application to allow the strap to be routed freely around the back and shoulder without restriction.
- Step 2 — Place arm into the pouch and route the strap: Slide the affected forearm into the fabric pouch. Route the strap around the back of the body and up over the opposite (unaffected) shoulder, bringing the strap end to the front to connect with the buckle.
- Step 3 — Adjust the comfort pad and re-fasten the buckle: Position the comfort pad at the point where the strap rests on the shoulder — typically at the top of the contralateral shoulder — to reduce strap pressure. Re-fasten the buckle.
- Step 4 — Adjust strap length for elbow position: Adjust the strap length so the arm rests comfortably at the desired angle — for most indications, elbow at approximately 90° flexion with the forearm horizontal. The arm should feel well supported with no sensation of the forearm sliding forward out of the pouch.
- Circulation check: After fitting, confirm all five fingers have normal warmth, colour, and sensation. Any swelling, discolouration, or numbness in the hand or fingers requires immediate reassessment of sling tension and strap adjustment.
- Removing the sling: Unclip the buckle to loosen the strap and slide the arm out of the pouch. Avoid lifting or swinging the supported arm during removal.
- Washing: Hand wash in lukewarm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and air dry completely before re-use. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, or iron. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.
Pharmacist Guidance — Neurovascular Monitoring: After sling application — particularly in the context of recent fracture, dislocation, or post-operative use — the patient or their carer should be instructed to check the hand and fingers for warmth, colour, and sensation at regular intervals during the first 24–48 hours. Increasing pain, swelling, pallor, cyanosis, or numbness in the hand are potential signs of neurovascular compromise requiring urgent medical assessment. Confirm the patient understands these warning signs before they leave the pharmacy.
⚠️ Important Safety Information:
- Fracture Assessment Before Sling Use: Do not recommend this sling as the sole management for an unassessed suspected fracture. A&E or minor injuries unit assessment and imaging must be completed before pharmacy-only management. The sling is appropriate for confirmed fracture management as directed by the treating team, or for confirmed soft tissue injuries only.
- Neurovascular Monitoring: The patient or carer should monitor hand warmth, colour, and sensation at regular intervals following sling application. Any signs of neurovascular compromise — increasing pain, pallor, cyanosis, cold hand, swelling, or loss of sensation in the hand or fingers — require immediate medical attention.
- Do Not Drive: Patients must not drive a motor vehicle whilst wearing an arm sling on either arm. Advise the patient of this restriction at the point of supply.
- Prolonged Immobilisation Risk: Advise the patient to follow their treating clinician's guidance on sling duration. Prolonged sling use beyond the recommended period risks shoulder stiffness and delayed functional recovery.
- Skin Irritation: Discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice if skin irritation, rash, or contact dermatitis develops at the sling contact areas.
- Serious or Recurring Injuries: For serious or recurring upper limb injuries, professional medical assessment is required. This sling is a supportive device and does not replace appropriate clinical management.
- Children: If used by children, adult supervision is required throughout.
- Keep Out of Reach of Children.
