E45 Wash Cream provides everyday cleansing that is gentle and effective for very dry, sensitive and itchy skin. The formula is free from irritating detergents and moisturises, leaving skin feeling clean and protected from further drying.

What is eczema?

Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry and cracked. Some people only have small patches of skin that are affected, but others may experience eczema all over the body. Although it can affect any part of the body, it most often affects the hands, insides of the elbows, backs of the knees, face and scalp.

When to see a doctor:

See a GP if you have experienced the following symptoms for long periods of time in the last 12 months:

• Visibly irritated red skin in the creases of your skin (e.g insides of elbows or behind the knees).
• Generally very dry skin.
• A history of asthma or hayfever.

How can we treat eczema and dry skin conditions?

Many different treatments can be used to control the symptoms caused by eczema including:

Self-care techniques:

• Reducing scratching.
• Avoiding triggers such as perfumed products and harsh soaps.

Emollients:

• Moisturising products that are used regularly to provide moisture, like E45 Emollient wash.

Topical corticosteroids:

• Anti-inflammatory medicines used to reduce swelling, redness and itching.

How do emollients work?

Emollients are moisturising treatments that are applied on the skin to soothe and provide hydration. They work by providing a protective film over the skin to trap in moisture. They also help to prevent inflammation and flare-ups of eczema and other dry skin conditions. There lots of different type of emollient products including:

Lotions

• Good for hairy or damaged areas of skin.
• Thin and spread easily.
