Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution is a laxative usually used to prevent and treat constipation, it may also be used before a stomach X ray.

Do not use if:
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • You are suffering from stomach pains or an obstruction in the gut.
  • You are feeling sick or has been sick in the last 24 hours.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution.

Dosage for constipation:
Infants over 6 months: One 5ml spoonful 3 times daily.
Children aged 2-12 years is one to two 5ml spoonfuls 3 times daily.
Dilute the medicine in a glass of flavoured drink such as fruit juice or milk and drink within 30 minutes of preparation.
Reduce the dose as the condition improves.

Use before stomach X ray:
When taken before a stomach X-Ray the dose is six 5ml spoonfuls, as a single dose.

Not suitable for infants under 6 months

Prolonged use can cause the gut to become lazy and not work properly.

Ingredients:
Docusate Sodium 12.5/5ml.
Sorbitol (E420), Glycerol (E422), Povidone, Monosodium Phosphate Dihydrate, Disodium Phosphate Dedecahydrate, Methyl P-Hydroxybenzoate (E218), Propyl P-Hydroxybenzoate (E216), Strawberry Flavour, Aspartame (E951) Purified Water.

Cautions and Warnings:
  • Docusol solution should not be taken concurrently with mineral oil
  • Docusate sodium is excreted in breast milk and should therefore be used with caution in lactating mothers

 

What causes constipation in children?

Constipation in children and infants is common, and usually it’s nothing to worry about. Some possible causes could include:  

  • Not eating enough high-fibre foods (like fruit & vegetables)

  • Not drinking enough fluids

  • Feeling pressured, or being regularly interrupted, while potty training

  • Feeling worried or anxious about something
